At age 71, there are few things he enjoys more then slipping into a smart dress, touching up his makeup and walking out the door in heels for a day of shopping around New York.

"Alana" started cross-dressing in his 60s, after the kids moved out and his wife divorced him -- perhaps, he says, because he insisted on picking out her clothes all those years. Though he now calls himself "one helluva woman" when he dresses up, he dreaded his first shopping trip.

For Alana, the solution came in a small ad in the back of The Village Voice, where Frishman's, a shop in the Bronx, quietly billed itself as a "Cross-Dresser's Heaven."

He could almost hear his heart beating the first time he walked into the store.

He went home a new woman.

As long as there has been women's clothing, there have been men who have wanted to wear it. But until recently, only fetish shops catered to cross-dressers. Now a growing number of women's clothing stores are trying to make it just as easy for men to buy themselves smart dresses as it is for their wives.

"For every woman who burned her bra, there is a man ready to wear one," said Veronica Vera, who runs Miss Vera's Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls, a training center for beginning cross-dressers in Manhattan.

Vera, a former porn star and sex columnist, overflows with femininity: raven hair, three-inch heels and even more cleavage. She says she has helped 700 men over the years with courses like Dining Debutante, Campus Co-Ed, Girl on the Go and Maid to Order. (Prices start at $635.)

Next fall, Vera plans to publish "Cross-Dress for Success," her second advice book. She's still compiling a list of stores that welcome cross-dressers.

At first glance, Frishman's, family-owned since 1932, looks quite genteel with its high ceiling and peach and pine interior. Its large front windows showcase lingerie, eveningwear, coats, shirts and pants.

The women who walked through the store on a late-winter day didn't seem to notice the man in the pink dress shopping quietly among them. And when another man asked for help buying panties, a saleswoman seemed unfazed. "They are for my sister," he said, pausing before he broke into a giggle. "I guess you hear that a lot."

"Honey, it doesn't matter to me," said the clerk.

In the back, Frishman's offers a separate changing area that can be used by cross-dressers. Its on-staff seamstress specializes in altering women's clothing and underwear -- even girdles -- to fit a man's body. She spends her free time making lacy men's underwear. "They are called sissy panties," says Sandi Simon, daughter of the store's founder. "They're very popular with some of our customers."

Catering to cross-dressers is not a large part of her business, but Simon says they are some of her most loyal shoppers.

Decades ago, Simon's mother had a pair of regular customers who were cross-dressers. But it wasn't until the store launched a Web site in the 1990s that it began to attract so many inquiries from men. Word-of-mouth advertising and the Internet have helped the store draw more customers.

Other stores have had similar experiences.

At Florence's Fashions in Wakefield, Mass., Barbara Mirlocca, the owner, advertises in alternative publications like The Transgender Tapestry. Now, cross-dressers and transvestites represent about 40 percent of the shoppers at her 42-year-old store, a tightly packed boutique in a two-story house. Most come in dressed as men and shop discreetly, she said.

"It's not a kinky thing or anything like that," she said. "It's just a regular store."

The Sally Ann Corset Salon in Chicago has even been tinkering with new products to attract cross-dressers, such as a Cross-Dresser Starter Kit for "the novice." Send your measurements and $125, and the Salon will mail you head-to-toe lingerie -- including pads for your bust and butt. (It's quite popular.)

Leaders of a national cross-dresser's organization, the Society for the Second Self, suggest that as many as 5 percent of men like to wear women's clothing. But most are secretive, never leaving the house for fear that they will be recognized.

"Most cross-dressers are ordinary guys who really want to express a feminine side from time to time," said Frances Fairfax, editor of "The Femme Mirror," the organization's quarterly magazine. "They are heterosexual, have been married or are still married, have children, pay their bills and their taxes -- all the normal middle-class things."

Her husband, for instance, is a doctor and father of three who goes by the name Mary Ellen. He leads the organization.

Despite their stability and buying power, many cross-dressers remain an underserved market, from baby boomers to younger men entering their peak earning years. They are desperate for places to shop, she said.

Many department stores will let male cross-dressers use the women's changing room if they are discreet, said Veronica Vera. "If you conduct yourself like a gentleman you can be treated like a lady."

Homosexuality: an effeminate beginning?

Do effeminate boys become homosexual adults? Psychiatrist Richard Green has identified a pattern of development including an early, intense desire to be a girl, that may help explain why a majority of the so-called "sissy boys" in his 15-year study later became gay or bisexual.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Green began extensive interviews and psychological tests on a group of 66 extremely effeminate boys and their families. All had been referred to him by other professionals. In most cases, the parents had become concerned about their sons playing with dolls, dressing in girls' clothes or playing exclusively with girls. Of the 44 boys with whom Green has stayed in touch (most are currently in their early 20s), three-quarters now say that they are homosexual or bisexual. For comparison, Green also gathered information on a similar group of more typically masculine boys (only one of whom has become bisexual).

It was clear to Green from the outset that the boys were not just "sissies." Although many were called that by others their age, these boys were different from other effeminate boys because they also actively wished that they were girls. A teacher contacted one boy's parents when he lined up with the girls in his kindergarten class to go to the water fountain. Another mother became alarmed when her 8-year-old showed her how he could hide his penis between his legs. "Look, Mommy, I'm a girl," he said.

Green agrees that the findings from his study could easily be misinterpreted. "I could frighten some parents of young boys," he says. "A boy's occasional dressing in girls' or women's clothes, playing with dolls, making believe he is a mommy, playing games with girls, or having no interest in rough-and-tumble play and sports" does not necessarily mean he will grow up gay.

Similarly, although no one parenting style predicted whether the boys became homosexual, certain threads were common in many of their lives, Green says. Some of the parents had wished for a girl instead of a boy and had subtly encouraged their young son to dress as a girl or dressed him that way. Some parents of effeminate boys who grew up to be gay had remarked that their son "would have made a beautiful girl." Many but not all of the homosexual men had spent less time with their fathers in the early years. Many also had serious illnesses in childhood.

Because of the special nature of the group and because of an enormous variety of complicating factors, Green is reluctant to make sweeping conclusions about whether effeminate boys grow up to be gay. But he does believe that the general pattern of these boys' early lives might hold true for others like them.

Green recognizes that some people might be tempted to use the findings from his study as a blueprint for raising "straight" children. But he cautions these overzealous parents: "The data do not tell us . . . how to maximize the prospects of a heterosexual adulthood. There is far too much variability." -Jeff Meer

How To Make Your Eyebrows Perfect

Grooming your eyebrows can make a dramatic difference in your look, and I don't just mean your style . . . I mean your overall expression. In fact, one of the first tools women learn when studying theatrical makeup is how radically you can change how a character is perceived- from harmless to wicked, or calm to terrified- by simply rearranging the brow shape they convey that much meaning. Brows can become the signature of your look; something distinctly unique about you. Think of the amazing Frida Kahlo, Bjork or Marlene Dietrich. The eyebrows are significant personal effects, and you're right to want to make the most of them.

Here's how to get great brows: The best looking eye-brows are the ones that look natural. Though most of us go to the parlor to get the brows shaped, you can easily do it at home. Put those tweezers down and start by cutting out pictures of eyebrows you admire. Practice on yourself by brushing them up with a firm eyebrow brush, or you can use a clean toothbrush.

Then, using a white or beige eyeliner, trace over the hairs you might think of tweezing out (to give the illusion that they already are tweezed out). This way, you get a feeling for the
shape, and can try variations until you like what you see.

First, brush your brows upward. Carefully trim any excess hair above the top of your arch which appears at the middle. Don't take off too much or else you may be left with bald spots on your brow. Now, check the shape properly. Ideally, your brow should begin at your tear duct peak at the outer edge of your iris and end at the outer corner of your eye. If your eyebrows are too close to each other above your nose or are too short at the outer edge, you get an "angry look." Therefore, be careful about where they begin and end. Sooth the brow area by wiping a cotton ball soaked in astringent over the brow area.

Hold a pencil in line with the outer side of your iris and note where the peak of your arch naturally occurs. From the arch to the outer corner of the eye your brow should fall in a straight or slightly curved line, depending on the look you're trying to achieve. Hold the tweezers at a 45 degree angle and pluck the stray hairs below the brow line. Remember to pull the hair in the direction of the hair growth for a neat look. The best look is the natural look. So, try to follow the natural contours of your brow when plucking.

After you are through, just fill in sparse areas with a freshly sharpened brow pencil; use light, quick strokes to draw in hair. Creating the most flattering shape and arch for your brows may be challenging, especially if you have missing, fine or very coarse hairs. Men with feminine faces will be luckier in love as most women are attracted to them rather than masculine men, Liverpool University scientists say.

While square-jawed men attract beautiful women, the less macho ones have a wider choice as their face type is more in demand.

Most women like a feminised face, but those who rated themselves attractive went for the classic masculine face.

Feminine faces tend to be linked with stability and caring, scientists said.

Several hundred students and staff at the university were shown a selection of computer-generated faces, manipulated to look either more masculine or feminine.

They were asked to judge what facial type they were most attracted to.

"Facial types indicate how a particular person might behave in a relationship and the potential benefits they could give to offspring," said Dr Tony Little, from the University of Liverpool's School of Biological Sciences.

"A masculine face is linked to high testosterone levels, which demonstrates good genetic qualities.

"Those women who prefer masculine men are selecting genetic benefits for their children, despite the fact that high testosterone levels can also increase the likelihood that the male will have an affair.

"Those men with a feminine face tend to be associated with stability and caring," he added.

Women who considered themselves highly attractive were more willing to take a risk with a highly testosterone-charged male, and were less likely to fear such a man straying.

The male volunteers were shown pictures of fictitious couples and asked to rate the male's dominance in relation to themselves and how attractive they found the female.

Men who rated themselves as attractive preferred women with feminine facial features, such as a small nose and chin and large eyes, which are indicators of fertility.

Dr Little said: "A man who feels that he has something beneficial to offer in a relationship, will want something in return and therefore will choose a partner who can transfer his genes to offspring successfully.

"We have also found that people tend to be attracted to those who look similar to their opposite-sex parent.

"Your choice of partner would therefore look similar to you, thus increasing the chances of your children also resembling you."

Most hormone therapies for the feminization of genetic men include both estrogens as well as some anti-androgenic drugs such as spironolactone, aldactone, finasteride and dutasteride.

Feminine poise isn't just something all genetic women naturally posses. When I was in high school, I was a Wallflower, looking down, leaning forward, and walking as if I carried the weight of the world. With professional training and devoted practice, I overcame my unfeminine mannerisms and went on to model on television while still attending high school.

What I learned in high school about poise, and have been perfecting for many years as a professional consultant to fashion models and beauty pageant contestants, I can teach to you. With the proper training and practice, you too can begin to walk more gracefully, stand more regally and become more confident with each excursion into the public, knowing you will never again give off the impression of "guy in a dress."

Fluid Movement of Head and Neck

Wardrobe

* A proper Sissy Maid is always impeccably groomed, with hair elegantly swept away from the face and fastened stylishly.

* You should look fresh and alert, but never draw too much attention to yourself. Makeup should be kept to a minimum. Don't forget to apply a subtle shade of lipstick as it provides a fine, finished look.

* An attractive uniform with starched cotton collar and cuffs gives an impression of professionalism. Ruffles and frills not only make you feel more feminine, they are decorative and pleasing to the eye.

* Hose are a must, as bare legs can be far too prurient! It is best to inquire whether your Mistress or Master prefers light or dark hose, as the overall effects of the two are quite dissimilar.

* Shoes should be comfortable enough for you to function, yet pleasing to the eye, with a two-inch heel at the very least. When we think of communications, many thoughts may come tomind.
Conversing on the telephone, chatting through computer
modems, speaking to friends and family, or even our own gender
leaders educating a group of budding psychologists, all these are
different forms of communication. As individuals experiencing
various levels of gender issues and self awareness, we often find
ourselves becoming more in touch with our feelings and needs.
Equally important to discovering new levels of self, is sharing the
discoveries we have made, so that we may enrich our experiences and
fulfill our newly identified needs.

"Coming Out" can be a powerful experience, often serving as a catalyst in revealing our special secret self, while at the same time, improving our overall communication skills. Sharing our gender and sexuality issues with people close to our hearts can be intimidating. In our pre-established relationships--i.e., family, partners and close friends, we often become comfortable in speaking about daily needs and occurrences. Often, overlooking communication as an important tool which cements our relationships together, at times assuming that those individuals "know what our needs may be." In revealing important issues, like coming-out, we deal with the focus being directly aimed at us. We may draw on the fear of "I may be rejected," or "I feel a lot of shame surrounding this issue." Hence, we perceive "Coming-Out", like other communication challenges, as risky business. In revealing deeply important issues, such as coming out, one guideline, therapist Roger Peo endorses is the fundamental question, "Will this improve my relationship with this person." This is an excellent measure in determining necessity versus risk.

Revealing our needs has always been a risky business. There are, however, a number of tools we can use in minimizing risk, which are illustrated in the following.

PREPARE FOR COMMUNICATING

Much like going to a business meeting, it can be helpful to prepare a list of items you wish to discuss. Also, talking with a knowledgeable friend or counselor can be helpful. Dan, our imaginary gender person, is about to tell his wife, Karen, about his gender issues. Dan first spoke with his therapist about his feelings, then strategized a communications plan, and finally, he defined a level of confidentiality to request from Karen.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

Make an appointment . . . was the first thing Dan did by asking Karen whether she would feel comfortable talking personally over dinner.

VALIDATING THE RELATIONSHIP

Validating the relationship . . . is an important door opener. It reaffirms that the relationship and its positive strengths exist. Dan stated, "Karen, I want you to know I've drawn a great deal of happiness from our eight years of marriage. What I have to share is very personal and I feel I can trust sharing it with you." Dan also sought a confidentiality agreement at this time.

RELIEVE STRESS BY REVEALING

Just about now, our imaginary character is starting to sweat a little . . . Like many great communicators, he found that by telling Karen he was feeling a little nervous, he had put Karen in an empathetic mood. Feeling comfortable, he now can move on.

SHARE THE FACTS

"Karen, I'm a crossdresser and even have thought of having a sex change." There, Dan did it! He then continued to reveal the facts he knew about himself, gender issues . . . all the time respectfully answering Karen's questions. He also, referred questions he didn't know to a future discussion.

AFFIRMING THE OTHER PERSON'S BELIEFS AND FEELINGS

Affirming the other person's beliefs and feelings . . . can be our most empowering step. It is at this point, that we may not "hear what we want." Dan followed this by listening while Karen expressed reservations about his crossdressing around their children. He told Karen he would talk to his therapist to see if crossdressing around children was harmful.

SEALING THE COMMUNICATION

Sealing the communication . . . Like any good communication, it's important to have a proper closing. Karen had stated, "I'm not very happy about this, and there is a lot I don't understand, although I am willing to learn more without passing judgement." In closing Dan thanked Karen for being there for him, while restating, that he valued his relationship with her, and then gave her a warm hug.

Communicating individual needs, like gender and sexuality issues, won't always be this easy. However, you have just reviewed some powerful tools that you may include in your communications repertoire. With practice, as you increase your communication skills, you will find an increased sense of empowerment and satisfaction. Do remember, after sharing something as stressful as "coming-out", you may be well served by spending time alone, positively reflecting on your personal success . . . and if you wish, rewarding yourself in a special way.

To get proper cleavage one must either tape, or wear a bra that's two sizes too small. The cup size should always be the same size as the boob you want. Your boobs can never be too big. Big boobs are powerful assets, especially when attracting men.

Dressing outside your age will get you into more problems than anything else.

if you sit with your legs apart you will attract attention in public. Guys sit with their legs apart, women always sit with legs crossed.

Shaving Guide

Shaving is an integral part of being a sissy.... and a woman.
Practice this assignment following these guidelines:

Part One. Lower Extremities

Shaving must be done in a bathtub.Showers waste water and may inconvenience your Mistress. Remember, there is much cleaning to do afterwards.

Use only high quality women's razors, as men's razors just won't do. DO NOT use anything that resembles an electric device. (We will speak of epilation further in this course of study)This is doing a disservice to your Mistress, as she requires a smooth skinned sissy. Not a stubbly one.

A soaking is required for a minimum of 10 minutes to soften the hair and skin, thereby allowing a smooth shave, and allowing your skin to remain intact.Since you have 10 minutes available, this is an appropriate time for your Mistress's pedicure.

Work soap into a foamy lather, and apply liberally over the area of attention. Do be sure to not apply in areas not planned for immediate shaving. DO NOT allow your razor to touch your skin that is not properly prepared.

Hold razor gently between index finger and opposing thumb.

Start at your toes, moving up to the tops of the feet taking extreme care over the anterior tibia and ankle. Be sure to clear ALL hair from legs, feet and thighs.

If this is your "first" time, shave in the direction of hair growth first, and then in the opposing direction after relather.

The backs of your thighs require the technique stated above (see #7). We recommend multiple directions after relathering.

Do take care behind your knees, as the Mistress has no time for caring for your wounds.

Do not forget your behind. This is always call for much correspondence with Our Staff. It is imperative that this rule be followed. There is nothing worse than a sissy with a hairy ass.

Proceed to Part Two or Three as defined by your Mistress.

Part Two. Upper Extremities

Assuming you have completed Part One, proceed to lather the upper half of your body. Lather and remove hair from armpits.

Proceed as with lower extremities, (see Part One) starting with your fingers, working over the back of the hands, forearms, as high as may be necessary.

Stomach. Start by shaving low into the pubic hair to create a sharp, neat triangle similar to your Mistress's. Work against the grain of hair growth, giving proper attention to navel. Do not allow hair to remain inside the navel cavity.

Proceed to chest, taking care to not remove nipples. You will need these soon.

Wash thoroughly using a loofah or other similar device. Remove all residual lather and hair.

Part Three. Exiting Procedure

Before attempting to exit bathtub, call for Mistress to review the quality of hair removal.

Make corrections as necessitated by Mistress's review.

Upon exiting the bathtub, apply lotion to the shaved areas to guard against razor rash. Razor rash is a very discomforting affliction, and even more of an eyesore for your Mistress.

Clean tub thoroughly.
